Travel Goa under Budget : Day 1 (Doodhsagar Falls)

NOTE : This post is a part of “Travel Goa under Budget” which is a travelogue providing trip advise and travel plan to keep your expenses to the minimum so that you can enjoy the beauty of Goa in a cheap and inexpensive manner but at the same time safe and memorable.

9 July 2011

The Not so Popular (but Cool Nevertheless) way of Hanging  out in Doodhsagar Waterfalls

The morning blossomed and the party mood in our compartment  was on its high as the train has entered the borders of Goa. There was two notable group of people who were with us on the compartment one a group of people about 35 in number mostly elderly who were going as apart of packaged tour on a two day trip while the other was a gang of college students from Karnataka somewhere around 20 in number. The journey was memorable as many of us in the boggie were on our first time visit to Goa and were all delighted to see the beauty of nature on both sides of the train.
Singing, hooting, and screaming as we passed by the tunnel I too joined the fun and let my emotions loose. There was also a number of people trying to capture each and every  shot of the bountiful nature which the land played host to.
streams of water and trees which passed by

And obviously seeing to the reaction which we had some of the resident of the state who were our co- passengers looked at us like a pack of fools who were clicking on the fields and trees that was passing behind as the train raced against time and distance. No complaints about them as they were used to it (as they have been living here for a long time) and took the beauty of nature as granted. But from their perspective they too may have got disturbed by the noise which was being made by us,but the blame was not on just us youngsters but the elderlies who were traveling with us should also be responsible as they too contributed to their best in the mess (just kidding…. After all vacation is fun )which we have created in the compartment.
Nearing Doodhsagar Falls

Yeah meanwhile I was informed that Doodhsagar Falls would be soon coming and this was one of the places in the list my friend  has given me to complete the challenged also this place was marked the 20 mandatory places. But there was one more trouble, to qualify any place as being visited I should spend atleast half an hour there while the train had no stop anywhere near the Waterfall.
So that meant I had to come all the way back to complete my challenge and let me remind you I was traveling with a limited budget of Rs 1000 only.
But fate had other plans for me and surprisingly it was on my favor.
View as our Train plunges forward

The train halted at Doodhsagar Station the nearest station to the waterfall (there was only a platform on to our right) citing some technical glitch or for crossing we weren't aware of.
Soon people started getting out. This is usual in any part of our country. I too got down and started taking snapshots of the surroundings with my mobile camera( Samsung Star Touch 3G). but I have to admit that the mobile had one of the finest cameras back then.
For 10 minute we were just roaming around but soon we youngsters joined and decided to venture out to the waterfalls (trekking to the top by foot was restricted without the permission of the concerned authorities) as the train was showing no signs of movement anywhere within the near future.
A few steps from here would lead us to the second largest waterfall  in our country and it wouldn’t be difficult for anyone with basic knowledge in Hindi to decipher the meaning of the place: ocean( sea )of milk and the name comes from the fact that white foams are created from the force of the water as it drops and hits the solid ground. And we being first timers to the party capital of our country didn’t want to miss this bounty of nature.
View of Doodhsagar Falls: The closest i could get
So we also made a deal with one of our co passenger that he will pull the chain if the train moved without us and we agreed among ourselves that we will contribute to the fine levied on us equally.
Come on guys 28 of us  were there so the fine per head would obviously be close to Rs 35 which was nothing in front of the adventure we would be having  by this adventurous trip to the falls.by falls here I meant the nearest point accessible to us from the station and not the tip of the waterfall .
Of course there was no deal made with my friend about bathing in the falls. And soon I was taken by the magnificence of the fall and the elegance with water flowed through it, it was as couple of white serpents were making their way from top of a mountain to the bottom and that too gracefully.
The serenity and the calmness of the place had a refreshingly peaceful effect on both my body and mind and looking at the falls was nothing less than meditation and soon i realized that capturing those moments on the eyes of my soul was far better than capturing it as a frame through the cameras lens, but I did took some shots which I considered as breathtaking when I knew nothing about photography.

A Long Range view of the majestic Wonder

The slight breeze of water which the air carried on to my face from the waterfall aroused me in a feeling as if the waterfall has welcomed me,Goa has welcomed me,I was welcomed by the bliss of the nature.
This is one moment near the one of the highest waterfall  in our country that I would cherish in my life throughout.
What appeared to be a few minutes in front of this four tier waterfall  had removed my tiredness which has creeped into my body and slowly making progress into my mind as a result of my non stop travel for the past months.
This was a refreshing start for my trip in Goa and my instincts told me that everything would be in place throughout my journey.
And yeah back to those few minutes , actually little more than 20 minutes passed by as Einstein's theory of relativity has done its job.
Soon we were joined by the elderlies who by now had enough of waiting in the train and they too seemed to stretch their legs.
And what followed was a series of group photographs which I was more than glad to shoot both of the college guys and the elderlies.
The creative posture given by the elderlies was something which I loved taking and so was the mischief poses given by the college gang.
After almost another 20 minutes of photo session and fun I decided to sit down and to delve deeper into the manner in which nature was trying to complement me.
Yeah and I do agree that this isn't the conventional way in which people holiday atleast in this falls but nevertheless I too had my share of experience about which I have no regrets.
But one day I too would like to spend an entire day holidaying and trekking here and now that I have got an SLR for myself I can spend a week  photographing without even knowing that time has pass by
And after some time one of the guy from the college gang came and told me that its time we get back to the train as they have received a call from their friend that the train was about to move anytime soon.
one of the shot from my photo session (faces blurred intentionally)

I got up and we started heading back to our train. And before we reached the train begin to move.
So what ,we boarded it while it was moving and mind you there was no platform but still it was fun.Once on board  we quickly counted and it was sure that none was left back.
Amidst this chaos which we created on boarding the train I managed to get a glimpse of the serene imposing falls for one last time.
And yeah as I  have spent around 45 minutes at the falls itself one of the location marked mandatory was accomplished by me.
And the train was moving ahead to give me much more experience which I can share with you.
